Merry ChristMess!

My children have had three Christmases. They had a lovely one at home and then one with each set of grandparents. With every gift comes a new mess! The paper, the tags, the strings, the cardboard, the plastic, the twist ties, the shreds of everything that show up for days to come no matter how many times you've run the vacuum through the house. I have three children and we are officially overrun with toys. I told the children yesterday that they each need to find 10 toys that have not been used to donate. (I'm aiming for 15 ... I know I will have to pull a few on the sly!) I hate mess. I hate clutter and I hate chaos. I believe in throwing 10 things away every day - even if just 10 pieces of paper. I am not a packrat - though I was as a child and I tend to purge more than I hoard. We have a nice sized home and yet I feel as though, simply put, there's too much crap in here!

It's supposed to be blustery out today. And cold. So we'll load up the back of the car with unused toys that are still in good shape. If I'm lucky I may even be able to fill up a garbage bag! I won't get my hopes up too high. I'd also like to start putting some of the Christmas decorations away. See above note re my issue with clutter and chaos. However this makes the children sad. The end of the Christmas season is almost upon us. (In my opinion the season officially ends on New Year's Day.) My children will be sad. So I'll preserve their Christmas a little longer. We'll do some crafts this afternoon. We'll do some crafts using our Christmas cards. We'll craft, we'll recycle and we'll have some fun!

I love the idea of collecting all the cards together in a book - especially with photo cards. What a great way to watch children grow over the years!

Cut out cards to create gift tags or place settings for future Christmas place settings.

Simple cut out letters make lovely and practical gift tags.
One could also cut out the alphabet to use as flash cards for the younger set.

Festive holiday garland to be enjoyed by everyone!

Create mini trees by recycling old cards.

This is one of my favorite ideas! Take a picture of photo cards and then use the pictures to mark your contacts!

I love this as a Thank you card. I plan on cutting out these words from our existing Christmas cards and posing my kids. What a great way to send a thank you note. These can be done right from a printer at home!

Warm and Happy Holiday Wishes to you!

C'mon Santa, Bring it on!

Source: kcmeesha.com via Matthew on Pinterest

Some how I did it! Somehow I'm done!
I wrapped all the presents, I even had fun!

There's nothing to do,
No time to boo hoo!

The house is all clean, no dust to be found.
Go take a look, go walk around!

The children have gathered things from the floor
Without even jamming stuff behind the door!

The cookies are done, ready to go
In anticipation of a certain Ho Ho Ho!

I did it this year! I did it in time!
I did it without a tear or a whine!

The children are glad they have me all day,
Plenty of time to eat, bake and play!

I'm so very proud, I don't mean to boast,
but for breakfast I made a tree from French Toast!

The presents are well hidden, go poke around,
I assure you there's not one to be found!

We're ready for Santa, his reindeer too,
We've opened up and cleaned out the flue!

So Santa Claus, without further ado
We're anxiously awaiting the arrival of you!

(my French Toast tree!)

Merry Christmas Everyone!
May your day be Cheerful and full of Cheer!

XOXO

Christmas at the Entertaining House

So, we're here. It's upon us. Christmas is here. It's Christmas Eve Eve, which to my children means that Christmas is here. And I am not ready. Not even close. Not even close to being close. My house is a mess. Better than that, it's a disaster. I need to clean and tidy and vacuum and mop. I have hours of cleaning ahead of me. I have bags in the back of my car. I've started purchasing for my kids but I have no idea what I've gotten. It's all been a crazy chaotic blurr. The traffic, the insane drivers, the crowds, the lines, the mass disorganization has my head spinning. I have clothes in the back of the car. Lots and lots of clothes. My kids need clothes desperately and I've scored some amazing sales. I need fillers and they need clothes. Seems like a win-win situation for me!

Of course I can just see the enthusiasm as my 11 year old son opens boxes of clothes. Clothes are so not his thing. But I needed filler and he needs clothes. And that's how I'm operating this year, dammit! Gift cards are the hot ticket item this season. My older two want gift cards. Boring gift cards. I understand them wanting to shop and being able to pick out the things that they want. Rebecca will spend hours in the mall (Lord help me!) and I am not all entirely sure what Christopher will do with his. Alexander is easy. He still likes toys. Toys make everything easier. Why do kids have to grow up?

So you see, I find Christmas quite painful. Rebecca will get her gift cards and she will be over the moon delighted. She'll start plotting out her trip to this store and that store. This is a case of this hurts me more than it hurts you. I'm not a big shopper. In fact, truth be said, I really hate shopping. If I need something I go in for what I want. I don't have any desire to walk around aimlessly in and out of stores. My legs get sore. My feet ache. My back hurts. Can we go home yet? Are we there yet? Ok, that looks good, now let's get out of here! If I could I would groan. Rebecca got shortchanged. She got a mother who does not like to shop. She got a mother who hates to shop. Joy will be the day when she can wander the mall alone, without me. Ugh, no that won't be joyous at all. I won't have a Mall Rat for a daughter! There's still time. Maybe those gift cards can still be returned... They certainly haven't been wrapped.

I will try to hide in the playroom and wrap this afternoon. I'm really hoping the kids will let me. I'll set everything up on the craft table and I'll turn on the television to entertain me. I'll organize the gifts in to piles and then I will panic if one child gets more than the other because you know they're counting and comparing! Boy did my parents have it easy with my being an only child! I'll look at the boxes I bought, glance at the gifts, the rolls of wrapping paper and stick-on bows... I have the tape and the scissors and am ready to go. I start to panic. I can feel it. My heart rate speeds up. I start to feel warm. I take off my sweater. My chest tightens up.The wrapping is overwhelming. I'm overwhelmed. I can't do it. I have to. I can't back down! I'll go downstairs, pad across the family room where the kids will be watching TV, open up a cabinet, grab a glass, grab the bottle of red on the counter-top, and pad back across the family room and back up to the playroom. I'll pour myself a little glass of hope, take a sip, and get to work.

I used to love to wrap bk... (before kids.) Back then I would painstakingly dress up packages in beautiful papers and elegant ribbons. In those days each package looked like something that could adorn the cover of Martha Stewart's Living magazine. With each and every kid I had, my patience grew less and less. Soon, a love for wrapping became pure hatred. I've developed sort of a fear of it lately, maybe even a phobia. Is it Toomuchtowrapaphopia? Fearofbrightlycoloredpaperaphobia?

I ask myself why do we wrap? Where did this tradition come from? (Note to self: Google history of wrapping!) Why can't we just  leave everything under the tree as is and have a free for all?

Each gift takes about 3-5 minutes to wrap and 15 seconds to unwrap. Do the math. The numbers just don't add up. This seems like both a waste of time and energy. Seems like this is neither good for our trees or landfills. Sorry Hallmark.

Don't even get me started on the mess the torn wrapping paper makes! This is another phobia of mine, torn shreds of paper, and wadded up paper balls strewn across my floors. Bits of ribbon here... bits of cardboard there... It drives me mad!  I can't sit idly and let the colorful papers cover my floor like confetti after some grand celebration... I can't. I start to itch and twitch. STOP! I shout to the kids. I make whoever is unwrapping take a timeout. I run to the kitchen in full blown panic attack mode and open the cabinet beneath the sink. I've got the Glad bag in my hand, my breathing slows, my pulse slows... soon all will be OK with the world again! My family knows this about me. One of my little foibles.

Now I'm sitting on my bed (that needs to be stripped) in my pink and green Lilly Pulitzer pajamas (Christmas present to myself last year) and I am tuning out everything around me. I'm experiencing typical ADHD avoidance. I need to change 4 beds. I need to shower. I need to make breakfast. I need to pick up a few presents and I need to wrap and I wonder just how much longer I can put that off. Is it too early to pour myself a cup of cheer?

Next year I vow to have everything taken care of by Thanksgiving!

XOXO

Have yourself a happy little homemade Christmas!

I love receiving homemade gifts. Likewise, I love to deliver homemade gifts. In previous years my gifts have hailed from the kitchen in the form of some sort of baked good dripping in calories and sugar! These are the best kids of baked goods, right? Well, there are other wonderful ideas that can be created from your kitchen... Some won't even add pounds to your perfect little figure!

I think homemade speaks from the heart and lets someone know that you have cared enough of them to put time and thought into their gift. A perfect gift needs not damage your bank account any further. With homemade there is truly something for everyone on your list. I've gathered some of my favorite things to make - and I'll be sure to make a little extra for me!

This lemon scrub is a favorite of mine!

I'm going to whip up some of this later today!

It's 5:00 somewhere, right? These delightful fruit-infused vodkas hail from my friend Kelsey Banfield's blog The Naptime Chef. (She's got loads of other ideas and her book is out this Spring!)

I have never met a Limoncello I didn't like love!

Easy, elegant, sophistication!

A different kind of baked good. I adapted this Egg Nog cake recipe from another and it is deliciously decadent!

These biscotti are soft, crunchy and a lovely alternative to a traditional cookie!

With the exception of the Eggnog cake recipe, these are all perfect gifts for any time of year!

Do you like to give homemade gifts? What sorts of gifts do you like?

it's a wrap!

I love the look of many packages together tied up with strings... especially when all the packages are uniform in color, style or theme. In the days before I had children I took such care to wrap each gift meticulously, with love and attention. The packages beneath my tree were less statements that there were gifts within, but seemed instead to be an extension of the tree and my holiday decor. Admittedly now, with never enough time to wrap, and three little ones who always get too much, wrapping has become more of a chore than a pleasant activity. These days it's more of a race against the clock in attempt to get everything done and hidden, and remove all evidence, before the children return. One day, I would like my tree to look as though it did before I had to rush... when I had the time to sit and wrap and relax at the end of the day with a glass or wine or warm cup of tea... when wrapping was fun and not a chore! Until then, I can still borrow from some of the clever ideas below!

This garland idea is for the birds!

I snapped this picture at my children's school this afternoon. My children attend a progressive and environmentally friendly school. I loved the idea and the look of this simple yet beautiful garland. How fun for  the children to decorate for the holidays while helping out our local wildlife! Made by stringing together some oat cereal (like Cheerios) on a long string together with cranberries and other dried fruit this lovely garland will help feed all the wonderful birds on the school's campus. I think this would be fun to try at home too!

Since sewing needles are required to get the cranberries on to the string, mothers or caretakers will need to help our littlest crafters.

Marshmallows roasting by an open fire...

I just love how this sophisticated, elegant (Ok, I am taking it too far!) Lifestyle Blog has succumbed to a little red elf we, in this family, have come to adore. This is how I found him on Saturday morning when I came down for my morning coffee!

(I have not yet found Edward Louis Francis yet this morning!)

my conversation with Siri...

I replaced my old iPhone yesterday with the new one with the latest technology, her name is Siri, and she is genius. You talk to her and she’ll do whatever you want. So I thought I should thank her. I offered her a glass of wine…

the misadventures of Edward Louis Francis...

Edward Louis Francis, better known as Elf, has been up to a good bit of trouble this year. In past years he's been mildly mischievous. This year, he's taken himself to a whole new level. His most recent stunt was pulled while I was out last night. I had two wonderful events to attend. First, was an amazing event for designers and design bloggers, organized and hosted by two fabulous women whom I am proud to call friends, Stacy Bewkes of Quintessence and PR Guru Ridgely Brode, of Ridgely's Radar. The tremendous evening was sponsored by AudioCom  at their South Norwalk, Connecticut location.

From there I went to my dear friend Line's house for an ornament exchange that she has been hosting for well over 10 years now. Our core group has grown and I so look forward to seeing my old friends whom I don't get to see nearly enough due to our hectic and crazy lifestyles. We have known one another for close to 20 years and yet none of us looks a day over 29! I wasn't all that late when I got home... it must have been about 11:15. I walked into the kitchen to grab a glass of water when I sensed something was not right. I poked around... went into the dining room, flipped on the lights, and, well, a picture paints a thousand words....

Naturally, I could not have my kids witnessing such behavior! So I pulled him down from the chandelier and put him to bed.

This one I did leave up for the kids! They thought he was hysterical! A little while later I did some tidying up... and I found this!

Do you think that Edward Louis Francis learned his lesson?

I've unfairly accused the kids...

Lately it seems we have a problem with sneak eating. I blame not one child specifically, but know there are three (perhaps even 6) little hands that make it into the pantry with stealth and agility. I have started to hide the goodies. I have had to for baking purposes me! Have you any idea how maddening it is to absolutely need those end of the day m&ms to find out they are gone?  Bag emptied, left there in the pantry, contents removed? Well I have almost shed tears over this. The same has happened with chocolate chips, dark, milk and white. Unopened bags no less suddenly emptied! And so how can we bake the cookies? Our house is well sealed. We have mice but never do they come inside. Well, imagine my eyes when I found this waiting for me on the kitchen counter! I had to rub my eyes to make sure I was seeing what I was seeing!

And these were the Ghirardelli chips no less!

Hoping your day is delightfully mischievous as well!

XOXO

Handmade for The Holidays: Simply Spectacular Ornaments

We've always been creative around here and the holidays are no exception. For years the children and I have baked goodies, for ourselves as well as for others. We have made wrapping paper, gifts and we have made ornaments. I think I like making the ornaments the best. They serve as a piece of family history. I have selected some ornaments that I have seen over the past few months to share with you. I tried to find the simplest ones around so that they would not be too hard for children. But some were so pretty I simply couldn't leave them out. The ornaments at the end of this piece are the ones that my children have made over the years. My kids are done with school on the 16th... that's next Friday! We are always looking for festive things to keep us busy that week. I love working with glass balls as well as the Styrofoam ones. They're inexpensive and the end results are nothing less than spectacular!

Here, some yarn or twine is a simple way to add some pop to a glass ornament. Try adding some in color, all sorts of different colors!

Simple burlap cut into strips, glued on with a glue gun will give your ornaments a country chic feel.

Not exactly simple to make, but spectacular nonetheless! Some pearl beads and a hot glue gun would delight any pearl lovin' gal!

This ornament has a rustic elegance to it. A Styrofoam ball, some twine and a glue gun is all you will need. (I'd keep this project away from younger kids, however!)

Some old newspaper, Mod Podge and glitter on foam balls make a newsworthy ornament!

Eddie Ross divined up these country-like ornaments using old shirts. Annie get your Glue Gun! I just love this idea!

Made by the children and myself these three ornaments were created using origami paper cut into strips and pasted on to a foam ornament with loads of Mod Podge!

This ornament holds a special place in my heart. Made by Rebecca, a huge Madeline fan, at age 5, this ornament was to resemble the dress Madeline wore under her blue cloak!

This is the ornament the children made last Christmas. A simple idea and a magnificent result. I cannot remember which child made this one, though I believe it was Christopher's. He was 9 at the time. Here we took a glass ornament and squeezed a small amount of tempera or acrylic paint into the ornament. We used three complimentary colors for each piece. Once the colors were in we just shook them so that the color evenly covered the inside of the ball. As long as the ornament doesn't break, the colors will remain true, intact and won't fade. We did let them dry overnight before placing the metal piece back on top.

A true gift of the sea. This glass ornament is filled with sand and sea glass from our summers in Maine. We needed only a small funnel to get the sand in. Important to note, sand is heavy and too much (as we have here) will make the ornament too heavy to hang on the tree. This one was displayed elsewhere.

I hope this has inspired you to get crafty with your children. You'll create the most magnificent memories, and if you do these yearly as we do, you'll find yourself chronicling special aspects of your lives as a family.

Wishing you a warm and wonderful day!

XOXO
