Pink Cosmos +Tomato, Mozarella, Basil and Boursin on Baguettes + SATC2 with the Girls = 1 Fun Night!

The last time our book club got together we decided that we would read The Carrie Diaries, a fun summer read and then meet up to see SATC2 in the theater. Last night was our night at the movies.  Now, you should know by now that this girl is not going to settle for popcorn and Pepsi (especially since I am a Coke girl all the way) for a movie featuring Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda and Samantha. No, no, no...Our snacks and beverages needed to be more grown up... more sophisticated... more sexy! I thought we ought to somehow smuggle in some Cosmos. Well, the girls thought this to be a most fabulous idea! Susan put herself in charge of the drinks and I put myself in charge of dinner. My first thought was to bring a baguette and some brie, but that would be too messy. So I made what I will now refer to as my SATC2 Sandwiches... a baguette, Boursin, tomatoes, basil salt and pepper... Easy to make, easy to transport and easy to eat!

We met up in the parking lot with our big bags. I took the plastic martini glasses off Susan's hands and we walked up, oversized-overstuffed satchels concealing contraband carefully closed, and purchased our tickets. Bingo! It was also Bargain Tuesday and our tickets cost us only $6! Once we were safely within the confines of our private row of seats Susan took out her goodies... bag of ice, sports bottle filled with vodka and the cranberry in another sports bottle. In a silver shaker she mixed the ice, vodka and juices... shake shake shake! She poured... we held our glasses up and toasted ourselves!

In the row in front of us were three girls in their early 20s. They thought our idea to be brilliant told us so. Susan, always fully prepared, told the girls that there was plenty to go around (she packed a bottle of wine too... just in case!) and told the girls that if they could locate 3 cups she had enough to share. One of the girls was happy to oblige and came back with three small plastic cups!

I think we may have started something!

As the lights dimmed I passed out the sandwiches. They were Amazing!

I had heard mixed things about the movie but add some good food and a few good Cosmos and any movie is fabulous!

My only major complaint was a fashion one. In one of the opening scenes we see Charlotte wearing the Not So Crabby Lilly skirt... This scene is supposed to take place in the 80s and unless I am mistaken, and I could be and please correct me if I am, this is not an 80s print! Why didn't they put her in a vintage Lilly? Am I wrong? Did anyone catch this?

And yes, you can dress this girl up but you can't take her anywhere. I spilled my Cosmo... not once but twice! The first time I doused my skirt... the second time I doused Kristen's white shorts! (I'm sorry Kristen! My stains came out in the wash and I hope yours did too!) She sent me an email last night when she got home. (I felt HORRIBLY.) She said that next time we do this -- we are going to see Eat, Pray, Love in August and bring some good Italian wine and perhaps some prosciutto, arugula and Parmesan on Ciabatta -- she'll be wearing black. I told her next time I'll bring a sippy cup!

SATC2 Sandwiches

6"  baguette per person
1 handful of fresh Basil, removed from stems
1 - 2 ripe tomatoes, thinly sliced
2 Tbs Boursin per sandwich
Salt and pepper to taste

I used a supermarket baguette, which in most cases I wouldn't have, but worked out perfectly for these sandwiches.

Slice each baguette in half and scoop out some of the doughy middle. Toss.
Spread about 1 tbs of the Boursin on each half
Place tomatoes on one half, cover fully. Add salt and pepper if desired.
Place basil on top.
Close sandwich and if bringing to a picnic or the movies, wrap well in aluminum foil.

I am stuck on Band-aids and Band-aids stuck on me????

I cannot believe I am about to post this... but it is too funny not to share. This is the type of thing that some other mother posts... not me... but here goes!

Alexander hurt his leg. He found these Band-aids in my bathroom closet.

Oh yeah... that's my boy!

Not the Newport Flower Show + Playground Fun + Lickety Splits = A Weekend of Fun!

We headed off to Newport again this weekend, our last visit before August. I had wanted to take the kids to the Newport Flower show because I know they would have loved it, but my cousin was there with her newest baby and we all just had to see him. So we decided an afternoon at the pool would be perfect -- especially my aunt's pool with their newest cousin and her spectacular flowers... I mean with gardens like these who needs a flower show?!

Above and below.... pinks, lavenders and periwinkles... all my favorite colors!
I wrote about my love for the sea (here) now imagine how truly relaxed I am when I get these wonderful flowers by the sea!

Dee also has a fabulous vegetable garden... I'll be back in August... 1st weekend... in case you have too much of something... in case you are reading this! Or in case Alex is reading this!!

Ahh yes, the stresses of the day have melted away...

The husband took this picture... I actually like it!

We headed to town early to brave the crowds which were not bad at all for a late June weekend... we poked around some of the shops and had dinner at one of my favorite places, The Brick Alley Pub... great for families... good food in a fun and casual setting. This is definitely a place worth bringing the kids to if you are in town. Make a yourself a reservation or else you could be waiting for hours. This is a hugely popular spot for locals and tourists alike.

After dinner we walked around some more. After a while the boys headed back to the car and Rebecca and I kept going. We stopped in at Island Outfitters to check out their stuff. Noticed the Tretorns.... OMG what happened to them? Tretorn, you will be hearing from me. You have completely ruined your sneakers! These are not the Classic Tretorn but a cheap imitation and I still have the original to prove it. Bevy, you are soo right in being dissatisfied!  I did spy a gorge pair of turquoise crock Jack Rogers and I think my cousin Ashley ought to stop in for them because she isn't ever ever ever going to get my pink ones!

I didn't buy myself anything... or Rebecca, for that matter, who was begging and pleading for me to do so! We continued on our merry way... I texted the boys as we turned on to Wellington Avenue... We had no idea where they were and thought for sure we were going to end up walking all the way home!

We stopped to take some pictures of the harbor and the Ida Lewis Yacht Club where I learned to sail. Er, perhaps I should rephrase that... I took sailing lessons there. Poor girl never learned how to sail. Tennis was much more my thing. I can't believe I actually got Rebecca to smile for me here!

The boys finally caught up to us in front of the New York Yacht Club which was good because I was very close to getting a blister!

The next day we took Alexander to his favorite playground, Morton Park.

The older two went exploring and decided to take the path less traveled...

while Alexander got the chance to be a kid.

On the way home I spied this house for sale from the Newport Bridge...
This one might just be in my budget!

One final stop before we hit I-95 and all the horrendous traffic...
In the 30 years that I have been going to Newport I have never once stopped here. Oh man, what I was missing!!

Alexander had fallen asleep and was too tired to get out for ice cream. He got a little something "for later."

A nice weekend was had by all... and now back to the grind!

Lessons from an Accidental Beekeeper

Have you all noticed that my kids have been out of school for 3 weeks now and that I've stopped complaining? Well, we've been busy with all sorts of activities and trips for the kids. We've been so busy that the kids haven't had a moment to be bored.  Earlier this week I took the kids, with some friends, to an Apiary a town over from me. (An apiary is a bee farm.)

Marina Marchese is known as The Accidental Bee Keeper. In fact, she wrote about about how she stumbled into this career. An artist by trade, Marina went to visit an Apiary and fell instantly in love with the little yellow and black creatures. She has since written and published a book all about her career change and passion for honeybees. The book is filled with all sorts of fun and informative facts about the bees and the honey they produce. Honey has wonderful qualities that date back to ancient times. She shared much of this information with us as we toured her "farm."

We learned that honeybees are vegetarians and do not like meat. The annoying, flying creatures you see at picnics are most likely hornets or wasps. Honeybees won't sting unless provoked they are gentle creatures who want solely to make honey. Should you get stung, however, gently remove the stinger and walk away, slowly, from the site where you were stung. If you can wash your hands to remove the smell of the pheromone. Pheromone is the hormone that bees excrete when they sting. Other bees will smell the hormone, and may sting as well to protect their hives.

Here honey bees are hard at work. Honeybees are most active in the Spring and Summertime. During the coldest months of the year they all huddle together and the activity caused by the buzzing of their wings can keep the hives as warm as 95 degrees!  They often leave the cluster on warmer days to EAT honey that they have stored inside their hive.

Honeybees love herbs, especially when the herbs are not harvested and left to flower. In the above picture the little bee is gathering nectar from flowering cilantro. Marina explained that she has not removed the clover and dandelion from her yards. Bees love these and these make for wonderful honey. Honey bees are revered in Europe and highly respected in Japan.

Our honeybees are European honeybees, and in fact our honey bees most likely came over on the Mayflower! Hey, wait... they're bees, not WASPS! (Ok, that was bad!)

Honey that comes from the honeycomb is the purest honey and tastes very different from honey found in jars. Honey, like wine, comes in many flavors, colors and varietals and is quite complex. Much of the flavor derives from the plants that the honeybees feed upon. Honey is the only food that does not have to be pasteurized as honeybees are that clean. Filled with natural bacteria honey has been known to aid the healing of wounds and cure many stomach ailments, sooth sore throats and coughs. Just be careful not to feed honey to a child less than a year due to possible botulism.

Above the author and beekeeper shows us how she collects the honey and honeycomb from the hives. In her hand she holds a smoker, containing herbs, to "smoke out" the bees to prevent them from attacking her.

Honey is a wonderful ingredient to use in cooking in lieu of sugar. It is much kinder to our body and our bodies process it and metabolize it differently than sugar. Marina has some wonderful recipes in her book. I wanted to make her biscotti on Thursday, but then the storm came and we lost power... Gee, I wonder if her bee hives were damaged... I hope not!

Beeswax is also used for many other wonderful items, including candles. Below, my children all have the opportunity to roll their own. (They now sit proudly in silver holders on my mantel!)

I learned that the Queen Bee is elected by her "peers" and that she is beautiful and shapely. She lays up to 2000 eggs a day! (I've had three children. More than enough for me!) Each hive also has a drone bee and worker bees. All bees are distinguishable visually... well, to a trained eye they are. If a queen bee dies or becomes ill, a new queen is elected to boss the other ones around. (My layman terms, of course!)

After our informative field trip was over we headed over to a friend's house for some lunch and more fun.

Our children are happy to be busy little bees this summer!

Marina's book is charming and wonderful! I could have gone on and on and on about the honey bee, but needed to stop myself! If you want more information just order her book here. Her honey is fabulous and she ships all over the country. For more information on Red Bee and Red Bee products visit her website!

If you have access to a local Apiary I highly suggest you plan a visit!
